Moses was rescued from the bottom of a ’long drop’ toilet, only hours old. Thankfully he was still alive when found, but he had contracted many diseases. Many women find themselves pregnant and don’t feel they have the means or ability to look after their babies. They believe that abandoning their baby in this way is the only solution. Moses, when recovered, was taken home by one of the nurses from the hospital, but unfortunately her husband did not want him there. Eventually Moses was given to another nurse who has to take him to the hospital with her every day because there is no-one else to look after him.
Another baby called Moses was found in a cardboard box by the roadside; again he was only hours old. No mother or family could be traced. He now lives in an orphanage with 2,500 other children.
Twins, Rita and Rika, were born to a mother who is mentally unstable. Their father is unknown. The two girls were also put into the same orphanage for their safety.
Winnie’s mum died whilst giving birth to her. Her father already had so many children to care for that he was not able to look after Winnie. His extreme poverty made it almost impossible for him to get milk for a new born whilst also feeding the other children. Winnie was also taken to the orphanage mentioned above.
Twins, Bukuru and Butoyi, were born prematurely at 6 months. Their mother died giving birth and although the twins had a grandmother, she was too poor and frail to be able to look after the babies while they were so young. The twins were cared for in a centre until they grew strong enough and old enough to live with the grandmother. She now gains continued support from the centre.
Bertra pictured here at five weeks old, was given to the same centre because his mother died and his father didn’t have the confidence to look after a new born. Bertra went into the centre to be cared for the first two years of his life and his father visits him regularly to learn new skills and gain the confidence to care for his son himself in the future.
